Annual Meeting Minutes 2011
July 23rd 2011 LPADA Annual Meeting
Lake Poinsett Area Development Association annual meeting was held at the Lake Poinsett Camp Chapel on July 23rd 2011 at 6:45PM.
Meeting called to order by President Roger Starks.
Marvin Nofziger opened the meeting with the Pledge of the Allegiance.
Roger Starks issued special thanks to Steve Foss for the use of the church camp, Dave Schaefer and the county commissioners for help during the flood, Sue Peters for the LPADA emails, Sponsors listed on the banner for giveaways and help for the meal, Bob Quigley for the aluminum can collection trailer, Harlan Olson curator for the museum and to all the LPADA board members.
Steve Foss welcomed all to the Lake Poinsett camp. Steve stated that the kid’s day was a successful event held earlier on the water that day. Steve also informed everyone that if they have any questions concerning the church camp do not hesitate to ask.
Rick Eideker reported on the Sanitary District. Questions arose as to refunds for garbage that has been unable to be collected. Rick stated that if residents contact the garbage service they may get a credit on next years garbage collections. Also if there’s an area where garbage cannot be collected, take it to an area where garbage is being picked up.
Discussion was held regarding the flood gates and the slow rate that the water is flowing out of the gates. Questions arose to if the gates can be made wider in order to get water out of the lake quicker. It was stated that the bridge is currently narrower then the gates. Questions also arose as to if the channel can be dredged between the gates and the river to help increase the flow of water.
Roger Starks stated that there will be no election at the annual meeting in order to reduce the size of the board by 1/3. Roger questioned if there was anyone interested in running or if there were any new nominations from the floor. No new nominations from the floor so the board now consists of 12 board members.
Committee Reports were given:
Mike Glavaris reported on the LPADA website. The new website is up and running and has lots of information on the site the web address is www.lpada.org
Harlan Olson reported on the Museum stating it has been a busy summer with lots of visitors. There have been 48 states and 19 countries that have visited the museum. Harlan is still waiting for Rhode Island and Delaware to visit. There have been many new additions to the museum this year and he encourages everyone to visit.
Marvin Nofziger reported on the LPADA golf tournament held earlier in the day. There were 40 players and $1,162 profit which will go towards the Handicap Dock Project.
New Business:
Discussion was held regarding shoreline restoration due to damage done by high waters. Contact Rick Smith to see if there’s money available to restore shoreline. Questions also arose as to who enforces the rules of shoreline restoration. Dave Schaefer is on the zoning board and can be contacted.
Roger Starks stated that the Sanitary board and the water board paid the Department of Corrections and the Estelline school to fill sandbags. There should be a committee to ask schools for help with sandbags for next year in case of flooding.
Discussion was held regarding the City of Lake Poinsett. Pius Lacher and PJ Turner have been doing research but they are not yet in a position to talk about pros and cons of becoming a city. There needs to be a committee of 5-6 people to find more pros and cons. There also needs to be more money to help pay for research, lawyer and engineers. PJ Turner stated that since Lake Poinsett is not a city we have no seat at the table in Hamlin or Brookings County and no seat at the governor’s office. Also we cannot qualify for grants because we have no voice and we’re considered only lake home owners. It may take 1 year to get information together for the 2012 election.
Discussion was held regarding the grey water sewer system. Money is there and the sanitary district is trying to get bids by late fall as the water goes down so the bids will be lower. The sewer will run from state park to the sunset addition.
Meeting declared out of session at 7:50.
Motion by Pius Lacher seconded by PJ Turner to leave the existing board positions as is. All voted aye. Motion carried.
